Barstart

Barstart is another hidden bar in Aarhus. It is well hidden behind a few other bars and under the pedestrian street bridge that also crosses Aarhus Å (A small river coming through town, and in this area both sides are littered with Cafe's, restaurants and bars)

Barstart is a cocktail bar, but they have a good selection of bourbons. Elijah Craig 12, Wild Turkey 101, a couple of Blanton's, Rittenhouse 100, Four Roses Small Batch and more

There is also a couple of good bottled beers, Crew Republic and Ugly Duck

My drink of choice fell on a couple of Classic Whisky Cocktails, Old Fashioned made from Elijah Craig 12 and a Manhattan from Rittenhouse 100

It's a cozy little place, where the bartenders and the bar is taking up a substatial part of the room. So you have a first seat view of your cocktails getting prepared

Reviewing Cocktail Bars is very much out of my comfort zone, but I like this place and will give it my recommendations in case you want to exchange your dram or beer with an Old Fashioned

24 Bars in Aarhus - part 11

Peter Gift

Peter Gift is an old fashioned danish pub. Usually these pubs are tainted with smoke, but fortunately this is not the case with Peter Gift

A very classic and cozy interior. There is 10 taps of beer and about 40 bottles. It's not the top brands seen from a hardcore beer entusiast but there is still a lot of interesting stuff as well as a lot of common big, not so interesting things.

There is a little section of beers from the local brewery Aarhus Bryghus

Other breweies on tap are Ceres/Royal, Thisted and Murphy's Irish Stout

There is a couple of good whiskies in the bar, but a handful at most. Whisky of the month was 12yo Benriach Sherry Cask, which in my opinion is one of the best sherry standard whiskies available.

On bottle the most interesting beers are: König Ludwig, Red Hook, Grimbergen, Sierra Nevada, Rebel and Rochefort

My drink of Choice was Murphy's Irish Stout. Irish Stouts, like Guiness and Murphy's is always a good tester how clean the lines are in a pub, as even a slight infection is easy to taste.

Would I recommend this place. Yes, it's a cozy place, and even the most hardcore beer entusiast should be able to find a beer they like to taste. If not, I would get a dram of the excellent Benriach 12 Sherry

Billabong Bar

Billabong Bar is an australian bar in Aarhus. It's a party/sportsbar type of setup

The style inside is more or less what I'd think a wooden shack in the Australian outback would look like

They do have a small range of semiinteresting bottled beers, with focus on Australia

James Boags, Fat Yak, VB, Coopers and also Fuller's ESB, Old Speckled Hen, Newcastle, Ale 16, Leffe etc.

The tap line up is a line of Royal, which is the 2nd biggest brewery in Denmark after Carlsberg, and their beers are just as uninteresting

Don't come here for the whsiky selection. There was an Macallan Amber though on the shelf

My drink of choice here was

It was an OK'ish microbrew style australian pale ale. It didn't seem to be the freshest hoppy beer I have tried

The music was great. ZZ top. You drink the beer from the bottle. And the gent's restroom has a ceiling covered in Playboy centerfolds. This place is Rock'n'roll more than a beer entusiasts place

Joe and the Juice

Sorry guys, today I venture into another non alcoholic establishment

Joe and the Juice is an international chain of Juice bars, with roots in Copenhagen

It's a cozy place, with sofas even. They have around 15-20 Juices on the menu. A lot of the juices has a nordic touch with ingredients like Beetroot, apples, celery etc.

Beside Juice you can get food like Sandwiches and Croissants and Coffee

My choice of drinks went to a Juice called Joe AMG and a black coffee. The coffee showed out the be an americano, and in my opinion it wasn't a bad cup, but there is many places to get a good cup of coffee

This is a great juice, I really liked it. Daring with an overload of ginger, the mint is laidback and present mainly in the finish

This is another cozy place in Aarhus. The music was semirelaxed

Ris Ras 

Ris Ras is another beer bar in Aarhus. Unfortunately it is very tainted by smoke, so I don't go there very often. It has the excuse that it started as a Cigar Bar many years ago

The bar has 18 taps of interesting beers

Saison Dupont, Ebeltoft, Ølsnedkeren, Westmalle, Hancock, Taras Boulba

There is also a couple of good whiskies, but not many. I saw three bottles. 2 Benriachs, Septendicus and Solstice, both 17yo and a bourbon, Buffalo Trace

My choice of drink fell on a beer from a brewery not far from Aarhus called Syndikatet. "Hippien" was a very good Imperial Saison

After this I had another beer from a local danish brewery. 

Ebeltoft Gårdbryggeri. It means Ebeltoft Farm Brewery

The Music was great. Pink Floyd. 

Would I recommend this place. Yes. But you have to cope with the tobacco. I come here now and again, but never stay for long. In the summer you can sit outside and watch the city live. Just on the opposite corner is one of my favourite restaurants in Aarhus "Den rustikke"

Studenterbaren

This means The Students Bar, and this an old bar on Aarhus University: The place hasn't changed much over the years, at least the way it looks

The bar has been there since I moved to Aarhus and probably since the 60s if not before. About 10 years ago the place got new managers and it was turned into a speciality beer bar, with focus on bottled beers. Beside that you see a lot of students playing board games and table football.

This is the hardest bar to find in Aarhus. It is hidden inside the basement of one of the University buildings, with no signs outside. 

Basically, if you don't know where this bar it is, you need to have someone to show you the directions to find it.

In the bar there is small selection of whiskies, about 10-15, most standard stuff, 12 year olds and 10 year olds and that kind of stuff. This place is interesting for it's beers. There is a huge selection of bottled beers, probably the largest in Aarhus.

They even have a special fridge, labeled the beer entusiasts fridge

When I saw there was beer from Pizza Port in this fridge I had to get one of those

Swami's IPA

This was canned in March, so not the frshest IPA. Still pretty good. I was participating on a pub quiz team, and one of the other team members had a Neck Oil Session IPA from Beavertown. I could smell the nice hops from across the table when he poured the beer. That was a fresh one. For my 2nd I decided to go for my favourite christmas beer, Winter in Bangalore from Amager Bryghus. Amager Bryghus is one of the best breweries in the world when it comes to hops, and this one is awesome

The music here is relaxed and nice. I am not sure if they still do food, if so it's just a toast

Would I recommend this place: Yes, it's one of the must see beer places in Aarhus

La Cabra

Aarhus have a lot of coffee bars. Starbucks, Baresso. Most cafe's serves a good cup. Surprisingly the gast station chain Statoil serves a surprisingly good cup. Also McDonalds and 7-11 serves very good coffee So it's not hard to find a good cup in my town. I am also a bit of coffeesnob myself, and like to make good coffee at home especially. To preserve my liver a bit a decided to include a couple of local coffee bars. I have no problem admitting that coffee  bars is not my top knowledge, so I had to ask a colleague, who is a coffee geek, to recommend two good coffee bars.

La Cabra is the first. La Cabra means The Goat. It is a coffee bar I have often passed by as it is right next to Le Coq. It's  coffee roasters and this cafe

From this list of 4 coffees I chose the Sumava, Ethiopia 416, Costa Rica. My guess is that Sumava is the producer (farmer), Ethiopia 416 the bean variety and Costa Rica the country of origin

What I got what this cup, with a coffee a lot paler than what is usually seen

And here is my first ever coffee tasting notes:

This coffee is very nutty flavoured. It actually is like a brown ale where normal black coffee is like a stout. I would guess the roasting is a lot lighter than normal coffee. So a lot less of that dark roast biter taste. My main tasting notes is citrus and nuts, and in the finish I get some bitterness and macaroons

This place has cozy relaxed background music.

It's open in the daytime, no alcohol served. Homemade light food breakfast and lunch
